The Course

School: Sports Department (part of the School of Technology)

Summary: This is a one year intensive course, ideal if you are interested specifically in the sport, health and fitness industry. 

Certificate in Sport, Massage & Fitness.

It provides training in all aspects of health, fitness, therapy and exercise.

Course Length: One year

Course Schedule: 3 days a week, 9am to 6pm. Days can vary due to timetabling.

Entry Requirements: Four GCSEs at Grade C or above, preferably including a Human Science and Sports Studies.

Core Skills: The topics that are included on the programme are:

Sports Massage Therapy 

Gym-based Exercises

Anatomy and Physiology

Functional Anatomy & Physiology & Nutrition for Sports Therapies

Sport and Exercise Physiology

Sport and Exercise Psychology

Work experience is offered with the Extreme Sports Therapy Unit at a range of national sporting events. You will be required to perform pre and post event sports massage on athletes competing at these events.

Assessment: Modules will draw on different assessment strategies which will include:

Portfolio based assignments
Practical activities/assessments
Group work
End of module tests
Presentations
Peer group assessment

Academic Progression: 

Teacher Training

Foundation Degree in Sport, Health and Exercise.

Career Progression: On successful completion of the course you will be able to consider work in a fitness centre, health farm, cruise liner or sports centre.  You might also consider starting your own business.

Sport and Exercise Psychology
 
Additional units
Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (GYM)
First Aid Certificate

Additional study (home based study) will be required to complete the course and this is a minimum of 15 hours per week.
